The Sith that was wearing his Former Master’s face tilted his head in silent confusion. “He’s telling the truth, you know,” he said softly, watching Obi-Wan intently, like some wary giant jungle cat. “The Republic is under the control of the Sith.”
“Am I to join you then, to have control of the Republic?” Obi-Wan all but snarled.
The Sith shrugged. “My Master, as usual, overestimated his own abilities, and has found himself in a situation he cannot extricate himself from without help. Unpalatable as the offer may seem to you, if you refuse him now you almost certainly spell his doom.”
“And what do you get out of it?”
For a moment, Obi-Wan saw a glint of familiar deep blue eyes as the man standing before him ducked his head. “Freedom,” he whispered, voice rough and gentle, and almost unbearably like Qui-Gon Jinn.

Date: 2018-12-08 07:16 pm (UTC)*I've seen this treated different ways, of course. I'm not sure it's something we know from canon. But I also ascribe to the view that Qui-Gon and Dooku had... a fairly restrained relationship after Qui-Gon's Knighting (even some years before, to be quite honest).

Date: 2018-12-09 12:12 am (UTC)Legends material apparently says that Dooku and Qui-Gon drifted apart after the latter's knighting, for all the Qui-Gon adhered to the vast majority of Dooku's morals during his padawanship. I don't think Obi-Wan ever truly met him, and possibly most of what he learned about Dooku pre-Geonosis was from Qui-Gon and that deleted AoTC scene with Jocasta Nu in the library.
Sith!Qui-Gon in this context is so interesting, especially given that he would have had to survive the Naboo Invasion somehow (and leave the Order, and not train Anakin, and-), so I love how you've written him and Obi-Wan's interaction in this fic <3

Date: 2018-12-11 04:39 am (UTC)Yeah... I don't really like most of the JA/backstory for pre-tpm that legends has. It's a bit too full of 'wow that is not how you teach or parent, wtf'.
But then again—for various reasons, fraught relationships with parent/authority figures, people who are just about unable to express themselves emotionally and cannot quite be enough for their student—those are near and dear to my heart. I used to have a pretty frosty view of Dooku, in that sense, and I think some of my au's may still reflect that, but I'm beginning to take a softer view of him. He's surprisingly fun to play with, actually, because of the sort of possible failures I associate with him.

Date: 2018-12-11 05:59 am (UTC)Dooku's grown on me, given the recent meta that's been circulating, and he reads a lot like the definition of "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" - he has lots of very valid points that were terribly warped.
