ok basically
sw doesn’t [so far as I can tell] get into the politics of things like: why did over a hundred worlds decide to give the republic the bird and join the CIS? What is the whole Council of Neutral Systems up to?

I’m currently raging at my brain because it’s doing the ‘oooh bad thing! Bad Thing!’ dance every time I think about secession. Which is kind of... I mean it’s always presented as Bad. And, ok, yes: a lot of the time withdrawal from the UN was ‘you’re giving them membership so we’re leaving’ or ‘you’re being all judgy cuz we invaded these guys so f u’. But there must be thoroughly legitimate and hefty economic and social reasons for buggering off and taking one’s chances in the CIS or CNS, surely. I have several worlds that went CIS by insurgency, ie, were pressured into backing out of the Republic.

Ultimately it’s not like there aren’t good reasons to tell the republic to F off. But on the other hand, since “everyone yammering on about how the system is corrupt but they don’t leave” is a perfectly plausible (and safe) situation, how bad does a situation really have to be for a planet to say ‘fuck this shit I’m out’? You have to have a compelling reason to disrupt years of belonging to a larger body to say either ‘I’ll take my chances with the new guys’ or ‘I’ll make it on my own’. That’s exactly why half the time it’s an attempt at a power move or political blackmail.

And in the present condition, secession from the republic sounds a lot like brexit: voted on by a bunch of people who didn’t have all the facts, buoyed up by xenophobic sentiment, wanting to keep the EU benefits. :/

Decided to track all my arcs that are playing into the frankenau. It’s been... interesting. There’s quite a bit I keep forgetting, and I wouldn’t like to miss them while writing. There are also arcs I haven’t completely figured out—actually, a lot of arcs.

I wanted to arrange things according to, if not timeline, then the separate Parts. My betas recommended I round up the Parts by theme, make them self-contained, so this is going decently well. But it is terrifying, discovering how little I have planned out, and yet how big the Parts already are.

But the latter half of the work is very underdeveloped, mostly because I don’t want to think about the war timeline. (Karma wrote one out that takes 10 years, which is more than a little daunting). I think the issue is that I also want another plot line for the war years but have no idea what to do yet. Honestly the worst thing about spinning webs, it’s the fact that you have to step forward into the unknown in order to find out more.
