Fannish 50 2026 #33: The Empire Strips Back
Oct. 7th, 2026 03:38 pmelaynaFive of us saw The Empire Strips Back, a burlesque parody, at the Rio on Sunday night. According to the emcee Eric Calrissian (Lando's cousin), burlesque differs from a strip show in that you don't touch the burlesque dancers. Also no pics or video, except for the final song.
The entire show was enjoyable, excellent dancing (though coulda used more male dancers) and many good songs. I have to be particularly amused about the last number, which was a reworking of Rapper's Delight by the Sugar Hill Gang, a song I used for a somewhat cracky fic 13 years ago. Not that I think anyone from the Rio read my fic Wonder Mace and Master QUI (https://archiveofourown.org/works/627711) but I was still... this is my idea! I did this first! Lol.
My pics of the theater here: https://www.tumblr.com/m-elayna/829229833966977024/this-was-a-very-fun-show-could-have-used-more

Fannish 50 2026 #32: ConStrict
Oct. 6th, 2026 04:16 pmelayna(There are 12 1/2 weeks left in this year and I have 18 FF posts to go. I will not be doing the bulk of them in December. Expect chattiness for a few weeks.)
During ConStrict, we chatted about the con's history, and I think Sian said it started in Vegas in 2001. I should remember, I was there! Me, Gloriana, Emu, Commodore Marie, her friend, and Sian around a conference table in a hotel (maybe Embassy Suites?), who would have thought I'd still be going 25 years later?
Sometimes I have a hard time explaining to people what ConStrict is. The whole 'we get together and talk' seems confusing to non-fannish people. But it is true, we get together with fellow fans and chat about meta or specific fandom topics, it's an annual injection of fannish togetherness and participation for me.
ConStrict is smaller than Escapade, so more informal. People suggest meta topics or what shows they'd like to talk about, Sian compiles a suggested panel list, asks for input, and makes a few tweaks from comments. There's a vid show on Friday, which Sian used to be solely responsible for compiling, though the last few years, people have been making suggestions so the burden is not all on her.
Saturday night used to be for group outings to dinner and a movie, though some years, the movies aren't appealing, and people get together to play games.
The hotel lets us into the pool early, for those of us who like a chat/swim before breakfast, and also allows us to stay late for the night owls.
The con used to be off-strip in Vegas, though in recent years has moved to Henderson, which is more reasonably priced, but still close to the Strip for anyone who wishes to do some touristing. This year five of us went on Sunday night to the burlesque show The Empire Strips Back at the Rio, which was a lot of fun.
The bulk of the attendees are still from the Master_Apprentice email list formed in 1999 after the premiere of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, but we have a lot of different fannish interests now, which makes for excellent conversation. It's great that so many people have been able to attend so regularly, it's lovely to catch up with them.
If you've ever thought about attending a slash con, ConStrict is small compared to Escapade, but very enjoyable to me and I find it easier to participate there. Two thumbs up from me.

LAST CALL for beta update and inbox page

dw_maintenanceIt's only been... okay, I don't want to think how long.
We are preparing to take the beta update page and the beta inbox out of beta with the next code release. We don't have an exact date yet, but this is your last chance to tell us about problems!
To enable the beta versions: go to Beta Features and enable the "new Create Entries" beta test for the new update page and the "New Inbox Page" for the, well, new inbox page.
If this is your first time using the beta update page: nearly everything on it can be adjusted, moved, or removed to some degree. The upper right side of the update form has a " ⚙️ Rearrange Panels" link.
Not every panel is enabled by default! If you don't see something you're used to finding, look in the disabled panels. While in Rearrange mode, you can enable or disable panels, drag them to whatever position you want, and generally customize it to your heart's content.
Once we push the button and switch to the new update and inbox pages for everyone, we cannot keep the old ones available. We are so close to finishing the decade-long "get rid of the undocumented custom templating language from 1996 that no one else uses" modernization project that's been sapping our collective will to live that we can taste it, and we can't convert the old update page and the updated inbox page is the converted version. This is your last chance to alert us of problems. If you let us know after the switch goes live, we'll still fix it, but we can't guarantee how fast. Prevent future problems and test drive them now!
Fannish 50 2026 #31: Mr Charm
Oct. 5th, 2026 07:45 pmelaynaI was thinking that I should do a post about ConStrict as I was poking at YouTube, seeing what was new, and there was the Rolling Stones' Mr. Charm. One of the ConStrict meta panels was about male standards of beauty and the new insistence that men have six packs, and admittedly, I don't think a man needs rippled abs to be attractive, but also... I do love me some shirtless Alexander Skarsgard. I don't know which I'd slash first, Mr Charm with the adoring small town teen trying to imitate him or the police officer sensing trouble and wanting to tame him. Both would work well.

Merfilly (some original, backup to AO3) | Merfilly (Star Trek only) | Merfilly (some of my comic book fics) | sylph_and_asp (Original only) to see samples. Of late, I do not care to write truly darkfic or death fic most of the time. I will not do rape, non-consensual touching/kissing/what have you, harm to kids, or other dark themes. Any fandom I have touched, even just discussing it, is open game. Links to previous works and "what happened X TIME" in/before/after it are welcome.Code pushed -- FYI
Oct. 3rd, 2026 10:20 ammark posting in dw_maintenanceHi all,
I had to push some code live today to fix something, and that brought with it a couple of new things like if you have two-factor authentication (2FA/MFA) enabled, you got automatically logged out and it is now required to log in. If you don't, you can set it up if you want (you don't have to.)
This also means that if you have 2FA enabled, you will not be able to use 3P clients using your username and password anymore. You should be able to use API keys in most cases, but there's some nuance to that (and tbh, I just am not precisely sure what clients anybody even uses.)
Please do comment if you're seeing anything weird, as per usual, and we'll work on it. Thank you!
This Week's New Releases
Oct. 2nd, 2026 08:39 pmsenmutKings of Leon - "Cold Blue Dawn" hit the right note for me.
Meshell Ndegeocello & Ink - "Guilty" cover, and like the rest of the covers from this album just hit right home for me. I feel like I slept on this woman too much. I was introduced to her, like many, when she dueted with John Mellencamp back in the... 80s? Nope, mid 90s. "Wild Nights". And then I never looked her up until this year, and I have loved everything.
izzy reign & Lyric Noel - "The Dead Dance" started off intriguing but segued into something I cannot actually fully recommend? It might grow on me. The bits I like are decent.
Christone "Kingfish" Ingram - "The Chase" is rhythm&blues infused with rock and I am here for it.
Us3 & Akil Dasan - "One Step Ahead" plays with the "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)" sound from Us3, which in turn had sampled Herbie Hancock's "Cantaloupe Island". I probably need to listen to the lyrics again, because I think there's a message here. Was just too busy grooving to the jam.
Bogoo's Best Day & American Authors - "Zombie Walk" was a cute poke at life and good Halloween tune. But seriously, funny poke at life.
Lil Nas X - "World's Greatest", which yes, I saw the video and it hit so many emotions for me. The song works for me even without the visuals.
These were the spotlights, with that one almost a good song mixed in here.

Sign-Ups are OPEN!
Oct. 1st, 2026 09:41 pmnightingalesighed posting in swrarepairsSignups are now open and will remain open until October 10, 2026 11:59 PM Eastern time.
You may request between 1 and 10 fandoms, between 1 and 20 ships in each of those fandoms, and between 1-4 additional tags specifying a medium you'd like to receive a gift in (fic, art, podfic, or vid). You must request a minimum of three unique ships to be guaranteed a gift. A signup that only requests three different ships under Star Wars Disney Canon will guarantee a gift. A signup that only requests Wedge Antilles/Luke Skywalker under Original Trilogy, Star Wars Disney Canon, and Legends EU will not guarantee a gift, and if you are a pinch hit, the mods will be in touch to ask you if you want to add requests. If you decide not to, we will post your pinch hit, but not guarantee that you receive a gift.
You may offer between 1 and 10 fandoms, between 1 and 20 ships in each of those fandoms, and between 1-4 additional tags specifying medium you feel comfortable creating a gift in (fic, art, podfic, or vid). You must offer a minimum of four unique ships. A signup that only offers four different ships under Star Wars Disney Canon is fine. A signup that only offers Leia Organa/Lando Calrissian under Original Trilogy, Sequel Trilogy, Star Wars Disney Canon, and Legends EU is not. If you do not offer four unique ships, and when sign-ups have closed there is no-one you can create for, the mods reserve the right to delete your sign up without notifying you.
You must put something in your requests' optional details. At a minimum, we ask that you put any Do Not Wants (DNWs) you have. Not sure what to put for your Do Not Wants? Check out our A03 Exchanges 101 post for more information. Apart from that, you can also put Likes, Prompts, General Screaming about ships. If you say that you have no DNWs, we won't solicit a new gift for you if your gift includes something unexpected that you don't like, as long as they wrote a pairing that you requested.
If you write a letter for your creator, please link it in the ‘Dear Creator Letter’ URL field.
A few tags include the phrase "Any" (ex: Any Female Jedi) or "of Choice" (ex:Mand'alor of Choice/Mandalorian of Choice ). If you choose to use these nominations, please know that it is the creator's choice, that they can fill with either canonical versions or their own created original versions, as long as it fits the rest of your request. Any requests you make about specific people with these ships will not be enforced by the mods.
If you are so inclined to join such chaos, we also have a Discord server.
Happy signups! Feel free to comment here if you have any questions, Anon comments are on, but comments are not screened - be careful not to be too specific/revealing about your sign-up. Sassy and I are so excited to see all the sign-ups (and cute pet pictures/fun facts)

Noms Clarification Post
Sep. 30th, 2026 09:12 pmnightingalesighed posting in swrarepairsHello! Thank you for your patience as the mods clean up the tagset. We have one ship clarification.
• Cal Kestis/Nightbrother/Nightbrother leader (Fallen Order)
To the mods' knowledge, there aren't any named Nightbrothers in JFO, however as there is not an 'OC' modifier attached, we just wanted to check. If this is your ship nom, please comment below with your clarification. Anon is on.
